Arbeitsmarkt und Beschäftigung von Frauen aus geschlechtsuntypischen Fächern +The aim of the project is to contribute to empirical research about higher education, employment and unemployment of women who studied male dominated subjects. This includes subjects where the women's share of students is below 25% (civic engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, computer sciences and physics - all without teachers). The research project concentrates on the old federal states of Germany since the 80ies; but also the new federal states are examined. The empirical basis of the project are official statistics (higher education statistics, microcensus, unemployment statistics).  +


Bessere Hochschulen durch gleichstellungspolitische Steuerung? +Equality Implementation Standards for Universities (EQUISTU). EQUISTU seeks to determine which control tools can be used in higher education management to ensure a balanced gender ratio in academic life. The project covers both universities and universities of applied sciences. A quantitative survey at all universities is to provide an overview of the current progress in setting up gender-sensitive control tools. Case studies are being conducted at 13 universities, examining the design of equality-focused control tools and the structural framework and processes that are involved in implementation. The results are to show the conditions that either encourage or discourage progress as well as any coping strategies that are adopted by those involved. The specific results will be presented at two regional conferences, and the general results at a concluding conference. The results will also be systematically presented for practical purposes in a handbook. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the European Social Fund.  +


Evaluation des Kompetenzzentrums Frauen für Naturwissenschaft und Technik der Hochschulen Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns +The Centre of Excellence "Women for Natural Sciences and Technology" at the universities of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is funded by the Higher Education Science Program (HWP) with the goal of increasing the ratio of women in natural sciences and technology study programs. Its conceptual basis is drawn from the Gender Mainstreaming approach that has now been implemented into the Higher Education Law of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The evaluation of the first project phase from 2001 to 2003 was assigned to HoF Wittenberg - Institute of Higher Education Research. The performance of the Centre of Excellence was systematized and estimated with document analyses, expert interviews, and the comparison with other projects. One result was that the sole aim to increase the ratio of women was too narrowly defined in order to account for successful work in other areas, for instance the sensitization of higher education personnel for gender typical problems. Finally, possible future developments were presented with the application of the scenario method, among others a possible task profile for the Centre of Excellence. (HoF/abstract by author).  +
Evaluation von FEMtech +The objective of the program evaluation is to carry out a critical appraisal of the work of the program thus far: analyses of performance and product portfolios direct survey of target groups, and placement in the international landscape of the promotion of equal opportunity for women in research and technology. The evaluation is a systemic look at the FEMtech program and ascertains its total effect. The focus is on the effects and consequences of the program, specifically at the structural level. The influence of the areas of activity on the perceived significance among target groups, actual changes and results as well as total progress in efforts towards equal opportunity in research and technology across three effect levels will all be analyzed: women in research and technology industry and non-university research institutions FTI-Policy.  +
Exzellenz und/oder Chancengleichheit der Geschlechter +Embedded in the discourse on the entrepreneurial university, the project aims to analyse the ongoing reforms in the academic world with regard to excellence and equal opportunities for women and men. More concrete, the project will focus on the national policies and discursive practices of the daily life in the chosen universities in Germany and in Switzerland, which will be the subject of the sociological discourse analysis. *Firstly, with respect to the reflexive research on the use of knowledge and to the concepts of gender knowledge it will be elaborated, which understandings of masculinity, femininity and gender relations are constructed in discourses on excellence and equal opportunities. *Secondly, it will be investigate as to what degree and with which consequences each of the discovered discourses on the national-programmatic policy level is newly negotiated, transformed or newly outlined at the local organizational level. *Thirdly, the correlation of discourses on excellence and equal opportunities will be studied, and which patterns of justification and effects of the national policies and the local organizational practices of excellence and equal opportunities in their reciprocal reference or coexistence can be found. Fallstudien zur Verschränkung von Fachkulturen und Forschungsorganisationen am Beispiel der Physik +The project is a collaboration between the Freie Universität Berlin (Prof. Dr. Elvira Scheich, Department of Physics) and the Technical University of Berlin (Prof. Dr. Nina Baur, Institute of Sociology; Prof. Dr. Sabine Hark, Center for Interdisciplinary Women and Gender Studies). In the past two decades the participation of women in STEM-fields has constantly increased. Nevertheless, the "glass ceiling" still hinders the participation and the professional advancement of women across all disciplines and occupational areas. With the research project genderDynamics we aim to understand the mechanisms, by which women are both in- and excluded from science, as embedded in current structural transformations taking place within the scientific fields. In the case of physics we seek to analyze these changes with particular regard to the interactions between professional cultures, different types of research organizations and policy-governed changes within science. Which patterns can be observed and to what extent do they affect gender relations? The project is divided into three sub-projects, each focusing on a different institutional setting and on its specific entanglement with organizational structures and professional cultures. Four case studies for each of the sub-projects will be carried out in German universities, extra-university institutes and new research entities e.g. excellence clusters. The case studies will be further examined with respect to their local institutional contexts and their coverage of physical research fields. Based on these results, approaches to implement equal opportunities in science will be reviewed contributing to novel initiatives in the scientific practices of the analyzed disciplinary work places.  +
Fe/male - partizipative und gendersensible Gestaltung technologieunterstützter Lernszenarien +The research project fe/male is devoted to this theme: fe/male places Web2.0 techologies in education in the center of the research focus. These technologies will be analyzed under the aspect of gender and also in relationship to their didactical deployment within the framework of a gender-sensitive academic education. A key aspect of the project is that the lived-in world of the youths will be the point of departure. Gemeinsam Karriere machen +The rising participation rates of women in higher education has led to an increasing number of couples in which both partners hold an academic degree. In these couples, the entwining of dual professional careers - defined as the successful pursuit of a professional career by both partners - becomes ever more important. At the same time, it is an essential prerequisite for the realization of female professional careers. The pursuit of careers in science and private enterprises by both partners requires not only increased negotiation and coordination efforts within the couple but also suitable external conditions in labor markets. However, often couples' efforts to achieve dual careers fail; most frequently because of restrictions on female professional careers. This research project will therefore examine the external and within-couple conditions for female professional careers as a component of dual careers in academic couples. For this purpose, we will reconstruct the life course patterns of occupational and family biographies of both partners and thereby take into account important professional and familial decision-making situations as well as advantageous and constraining contextual factors.  +
Gender Studies in der Ausbildung und auf dem Arbeitsmarkt +The Swiss Council of Science and Technology recently stated the need for the integration of Gender Studies into teaching and research, in order to identify the mechanisms (re)producing inequalities between men and women in all spheres of society including higher education. Up till now registers of Gender Studies in Switzerland document various teaching and research activities, but this field has just started to be institutionalized. Its still marginal position within higher education seems not only to express the necessity for professionalization of Gender Studies as an academic field, but also a lack of acceptance in education and society due to the paucity of information about Gender Studies itself. There is a strong need for more information about competencies and qualifications related to Gender Studies and the current and future demand for this knowledge on the labour market and in society. The aim of this project is to generate pragmatic knowledge about the social and professional qualifications and skills Gender Studies offer and the demand for "gender knowledge" on the labour market and in higher education. Beyond that it investigates the impact of Gender-Studies-related knowledge on individual employment opportunities and careers, as well as the transformational impact of related competences on workplaces and organizations. Analytically the project seeks to outline qualifications and competencies related to Gender-Studies training within the interplay of conceptions developed in higher education and educational policies on the one hand, the employment market and individual occupational trajectories on the other. The project is theoretically based on interdisciplinary perspectives within the social sciences, while it will also profit from methods of interpretative social research and statistical analysis. Empirical data will be gained with the help of semi-standardized interviews with representatives of Gender Studies, scientific and educational politics, professionals, and students and graduates of Gender-Studies courses and programmes in Switzerland. The individual occupational trajectories of past and present students of Gender Studies will be based on standardized questionnaires, and will be analysed cross-nationally in cooperation with an EU-funded research network of nine European countries. Addressing key concerns of current discussions in science and higher education and related policy fields, and contributing to the discussion of the relation between science and society in general, the findings of the project will provide basic information for students and academia, for decision-makers in higher educational and scientific politics, for employers, working organizations and the public. Serving as a basis for the development and specification of curricula as well as competence courses in Gender Studies, the study will contribute to the professionalization of the field and offer society relevant knowledge for meeting the requirements of our and future times.  +
Gender budgeting as an instrument for managing scientific organisations to promote equal opportunities for women and men with the example of universities +The Special Support Action (SSA) 'Gender budgeting as an instrument for managing scientific organisations to promote equal opportunities for women and men - with the example of universities' aims at the development of tools/ instruments to implement gender budgeting as an important part of budget planning in science. With the example of universities we want to extrapolate the findings to contribute to a gender watch system. In the project, three countries Austria, Germany and Poland, work closely together. This allows a transnational as well as an interdisciplinary approach referring to the methods used in the SSA as well as referring to the participants of the team. As all countries are at a different level of organisational development and at a different level of implementing gender mainstreaming and gender budgeting in science the comparison will enable us to develop valid results. Due to our project objectives we will use qualitative and quantitative methods. Among others there will be document analyses, expert interviews, participative observations, communicative validations and statistical data analyses. With these we will be able not only to understand the obvious but also the processes which are fundamental if we want to find connecting points for gender budgeting in science. We will start our SSA with an analysis of the national frameworks at universities, an analysis of the process of budget planning and an analysis of the actual situation at one university in each country. On the basis of the findings we will develop tools/ instruments to adapt gender to the budgeting of scientific organisations and formulate recommendations for gender budgeting in science on national and EU level.  +
Genderation BeSt +Gender Studies in Science and Engineering sought successfully to the cooperation project Gendration BeSt. The BMBF as part of the tender "Women at the Top" and funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) co-financed project will be conducted from December 2011 in cooperation with the institute cluster IMA / ZLW & IfU the RWTH Aachen. Despite the successes in terms of gender equality in recent years and decades, the proportion of women in the science system is still relatively low. Particularly in technical and scientific subjects, the proportion of academic staff, lecturers and professors is especially sparse. Despite a steady increase in recent years the proportion of female professors reaches only 16 percent nationwide. Thus, Germany is far behind international standards. In Genderation BeSt should now be illuminated in a mix of methods of qualitative and quantitative social research, the individual, structural, social and cultural causes that contribute to gender asymmetry in the science system. The focus will be the appeal process and the Third Party Acquisition. This is done in a first step, a qualitative examination of recruitment strategies to bring about that contribute organisationsinhärenten, structural and cultural structures and mechanisms within appeal to geschlechtsasymmetrischen distribution in the science system, so as to reconstruct the social facts "low proportion of female professors" at German universities and to explain the cause. These findings are then examined in an Expert / domestic workshop and is subsequently included in the evaluation of external funding and vacancies of the leading German research institutes and universities offering a promotion. Here will be found using text mining process and problem-centric interviews, how correlated the tender mentality of German research funding bodies with the low rate of female applicants for third-party calls and job advertisements. Objective of this project is to develop gender-sensitive and-neutral methods for recruitment and appointment procedures at universities. The project final is planned for late 2012.  +

To match the global reach of science and technology, methods of sex and gender analysis were developed through international collaborations. Gendered Innovations involves experts from across the U.S. and the EU 27 Member States.  +
Genderforschung und die neue Governance der Wissenschaft +The academic system in general and the higher educational institutions in particular are at present very important. At the same time, societal institutions are at the centre of competing interests. The higher education institutions, as places of monopolized allocation and acquisition of academic qualifications, are important for the emerging late modern knowledge societies and their prominent position in the global and international contexts. The issue of gender equality is also on the agenda. Here the equal opportunities policy employs a double strategy of rather individual specific actions for the benefit of women and the organisation-specific strategy of gender mainstreaming. Both strategies are focused on equality of opportunities and gender justice. In its turn, gender research aims at the transformation of the scientific contents, modes of thinking and forms of production. Equal opportunities policy and gender research stand in a tense relationship to each other. An important starting point to foster the development of the recognized innovative potential of gender research under the expanding new governance of science by means of targeted promotion for academic and social development is the study of the organizational cultures and structures in university and in research. The project aims at analyzing how much important is ascribed to gender research under the conditions of the new governance in the contemporary transformation processes of the academic system in academic, organizational (cultural and structural) and politically-administrative perspectives, and what support gender research receives from different science-policy actors.  +


Information for a Choice +Women are underrepresented in the field of Science and Technology. Available statistics from the European Union show that women today represent less than 30% of graduates in ICT programs and hold fewer high-level academic positions than their male counterparts. Two significant underlying causes for female exclusion in the field of SET are the pre-existing stereotypes that reinforce male dominance in the workplace and secondly the lack or limited information of role models, who can provide accurate information about career paths and obstacles faced. The partnership seeks to address the issue of 'choice' and low female participation in SET. The target group is young women in their high school years, in the process of selecting a degree and career path. The project will focus on providing accurate information and present role models who can function as mentors to those young women through the creation of an IT information system, which will enable access to young women across Greece and other EU countries but also ensure sustainable results since it will be linked to the Planning Department ( with responsibility for Documentation and Analysis for Life-Long Training) created by the coordinator, E.KE.PIS. Studies conducted by each participating country will select documentation on status-quo of women represented in SET, collect best practices and past projects experiences and present a comparative analysis. Furthermore the designed and developed IT information system will be used as a tool for internal and external dissemination and as the mean through which Role Model cases will be projected to the particular target group. Transnational partner meetings will facilitate exchange of information and progress of the project. The website will facilitate communication and dissemination of results for the project's life cycle. Finally, a policy paper will utilize the surveys and workshops' outputs providing instrumental guidance for policy improvements, encouraging female participation and continuing employment in SET careers.  +
Ingenieurabsolventinnen im Beruf +This project attempts to contribute to how innovative companies can reduce the job market barriers for female engineers, that are still in place in Switzerland even though there is a shortage of qualified workers. Although the conditions seem to be advantageous, empirical studies show that female professionals are challenged by bigger problems than their male colleagues. Not only during their academic studies, but also afterwards, in the working environment, gender differences arise. Potential female students anticipate these opportunities. The project focuses on how important non-technical knowledge and non-technical competences are for female engineers in order to create and sustain a gender-just and motivating work environment. Non-technical knowledge, understood here as contextual knowledge and expertise from fields such as social sciences and the humanities, is asked of graduates of the degree programs of engineering (we are looking at the degree programs Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences and Mechanical Design and Engineering of Universities of Applied Science UAS). It is expected of women (and increasingly of young men) to acquire these competences during their studies. Additionally, the holistic relation of products and services, a gender-sensitive corporate culture and -structure, and a sustainable communication is viewed as paramount by (potential) employers. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to focus on the perspective of companies (two corporate case studies) on the one hand, and on the perspective of female engineers from the degree programs Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences and Mechanical Design and Engineering on the other. Varied methods were used to receive the results. The results show that while functional aspects and motivating tasks are important, non-functional aspects and non-technical skills seem to be of even greater importance for the attractiveness of companies, a motivating work environment and the interdisciplinary education of students. Multiple courses of action are proposed.  +
Institutioneller Wandel zur Erwirkung der Geschlechtergleichstellung in der Forschung +The INTEGER project brings together a balanced and complementary consortium of organisations which share a top level commitment to the implementation of sustainable transformational change to improve the career progression of women scientific researchers. The project will utilise a simultaneous top down and bottom up approach to improve learning and engagement, and will ensure the lessons learned from delivery of other past and current projects is fully incorporated and built upon in the initial stages of implementation. The use of Transformational Action Plans formed from established gender tools, tailored to individual organisations, fully and properly implemented down to the local level from senior management, and with measured outputs to promote, embed and mainstream gender equity within the participating organisations, will result in the desired outcome of improved career progression for women. Sustainability will be secured by bringing about the desired structural change across the range of organisations through embedding and mainstreaming gender good practice. Changes will endure beyond the life of the project as a result of enhanced capacity built within partner organisations, and the ongoing commitment of senior management within those organisations as a result of recognised benefits, in terms of enhanced reputation and profile. Specifically, the creation of guidelines on good practice based on measured and effective implementation with clearly demonstrated results will ensure the methods developed within the project.  +


Karriere und Geschlecht: Weshalb wählen Frauen Männerberufe? +This project examines young women's reasons for choosing or not choosing male professions, focusing on the question as to what is more decisive in the choice of a gender-atypical profession or course of study: personal role models (parents, teachers) or school subjects. Background: Statistics show that men and women do not choose the same professions. Professions in the field of mathematics, computer science, the natural sciences, and technology are favoured by men and avoided by women. This causes not only supply shortfalls when recruiting employees in natural science/ technology occupations but also reinforces the prejudice that certain (personality) characteristics were "typically female" or "typically male". Prejudices of that kind are an important cause of the unequal career and life opportunities for women. Aim: This project aims to explore what causes young women to choose gender-atypical professions (for example, physicist, mechanic). To this end, the researchers investigate the influence of family and school on young women's ideas about their future careers. Do women choose occupations in the area of the natural sciences and technology because of personal role models (parents, teachers) or because school subjects in the natural sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry) attracted them? To answer these questions, young people in Matura schools and vocational schools in German-speaking Switzerland will be surveyed by means of questionnaires and interviews. Significance: On the one hand, the results will allow critical assessment of a widely held explanation of problems in the area of gender equality that is popular with politicians - "there are no female (male) role models". On the other hand, the findings will provide a basis for preparing the ground for possible concrete measures in the basic education, training and continuing education of upper secondary level teachers as well as in the design of teaching aids.  +
Karriereverläufe und Karrierebrüche bei Ärztinnen und Ärzten während der fachärztlichen Weiterbildung +In this study the career paths of physicians during and after the training course in Germany were examined. A special emphasis was placed on the careers of women doctors. Recorded by a methodical combination of quantitative surveys (questionnaires, Hamburg) and qualitative methods (interviews and focus group discussions, Leipzig) we analyzed longitudinally the interplay of objective and subjective aspects in terms of conditions conducive as well as obstacles in the professional development in the medical field.  +

Status von Frauen in der Wissenschaftsdisziplin Mathematik +Taking mathematics, which is a field vastly occupied by men and a male defined scientific discipline, as an example the study aims at clarifying the conditions under which women assert themselves successfully, that is, by doing their PhD, habilitation and getting a chair. Likewise, the structures of the department from a gender differentiated perspective as well as changes initiated by the growing presence of women will be analyzed. Female mathematicists who successfully established their position at German universities, technical colleges, and general colleges will be interviewed focusing on the question which individual and institutional conditions and structures they experienced as supportive and how they characterize their respective status within the discipline.  +
Statuspassage Promotion +In the framework of the Bologna Process and upon the recommendation of the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) there are intensive discussions on the doctorate education going on in Germany since the end of 1990s. In the focus stands the improvement of the quality of the academic education as well as of the supervision and promotion provided by the professors. High importance in this process is ascribed to the introduction and broadening of structured doctoral programmes.In the course of the launch of doctoral studies as a third study phase after the BA- and MA-studies, these structured doctoral programmes should replace the still widespread "Master-pupil model", the individual doctoral education. Despite the broad university and educational policy discussions there is a deficit of systematic research from a comparative disciplinary and gender perspective on the doctoral process and its impact on building a career in the next generation of female and male academics.Does a connection between individual supervision and promotion experiences and building a career in the next generation of academics in the transition to the post-doc-phase exist? How do professors interpret their own professional behaviour in the supervision and promotion of the next generation of academics and in relation to the establishment of equal opportunities for women and men?  +

Verbesserung der Unterrichtsqualität in den MINT Fächern +The project aims at gender sensitization of future teachers regarding the STEM education subjects (mathematics, science, technology, engineering). The focus is on the expansion of career and study choice processes - especially for girls and young women. The median term goal is to implement the courses in the regular program for student teachers thereby indirectly achieving an increase in the number of female students in the STEM subjects. The transfer is done via theoretical, theory-practice-oriented and biographical approaches. This is further amplified by undergo expansion through cooperation with Central Academic Advising, the Office for Teaching Education, the didactics of political, chemical and computer science. More intensive cooperation is currently being sought with other STEM subject teaching at the TU Darmstadt. The project is financed from funds for quality assurance of teaching and learning at the TU Darmstadt (QSL means). Currently the project is in it's second phase (2012-2014). Based on the experience and evaluation of the stage I (2010-2012), the project was modified. Now a basic seminar can be offered every semester. This offers a high number of student teachers an introduction to gender-STEM issues. At the same time providing them with basic theories of women's, gender and queer studies. To ensure personality development, practically relevant methods of teaching and support of students on their way to a professional and gender-competent teaching attitude, regular seminars are offered on: *biographical access, *video-based analysis of teaching sequences. *They open a gender-sensitive perspective on creating lesson concepts. Instead of a simplified theory-practice understanding professionalization is emphasized as self-reflexive skill and imparted in the courses. Students should achieve a critical and reflexive approach to their own biography, to gender-stereotyping of subjects and implicit attributions and expectations towards male and female pupils. The project shall contribute to the reduction of school gender territories and thus extend study and career choices for female and male pupils.  +
